Fall 2014

In the fall of 2014, the first small group of Centre students will take part in an internship program in Chicago as part of the Associated Colleges of the Midwest program.

The primary areas of emphasis in the program are Arts, Entrepreneurship, and Urban Studies; students have the opportunity to explore one of these topics in depth, or participate in classwork and projects across these disciplines. Students are able to explore the vital issues facing cities and the people who live and work in them while digging deeper to relate these issues to their personal lives, education, and career aspirations.

Housing. Students live with other Chicago program participants in furnished, shared apartments in various neighborhoods throughout the city of Chicago.

Eligibility. All rising Centre juniors or seniors in good standing are invited to apply. Students can take part in both the Chicago program and a long-term study abroad trip (as well as CentreTerm study abroad trips).

Classrooms. Classes are held at the ACM Chicago Program office on State Street, in the heart of downtown Chicago. Students will also spend a significant portion of their time outside the traditional classroom as they explore the city – attending cultural events, interacting with community organizations, meeting with business leaders, and engaging in all that Chicago has to offer.

Courses. The program offers an innovative mix of academic work, including an internship, independent study project, common core course about the city of Chicago, and a variety of seminars focused on the arts and creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, and urban studies and social justice.

Cost. Students pay a $375 non-refundable deposit/surcharge, their expenses of getting to Chicago, and a $3000 ACM fee that covers a small portion of the additional expenses of the Chicago program (apartment housing in safe neighborhoods, field trips, transportation, and some instructional materials). Any student who withdraws from the program before it begins will receive $2500 of the fee back. Accepted students will not pay the usual "board" fee (part of room-and-board) for the semester they're in Chicago and will instead use that money for their meals (estimated to be about $1000 a semester if they cook for themselves).

Apply. Application and faculty recommendation forms may be picked up at one of the campus-wide informational meetings on November 19, November 25, or January 8—or on the bookshelf in the Davidson Room of Old Carnegie. Turn in your completed application at the study abroad office no later than noon on February 6. Students who are selected must pay the non-refundable $375 deposit/surcharge to the Cashier's Office in Boles Hall by March 4 to hold their spot in the program.

Pre-Registration / Convocation Credits. While in Chicago, you pre-register for future courses via e-mail with your regular academic advisor. You will automatically be credited with six convocation credits during your term abroad.
