Folks not following Sundy Best on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram are missing out on an amazing ride, as country music singers Kris Bentley ’09 and Nick Jamerson rocket from being a local cult favorite to, dare we say, country music stars?
While the duo describes its sound as "ranging from country, bluegrass, rock, soul, and rhythm and blues," it is in the world of country music where Sundy Best seems to be finding its niche.
Just since their becoming a staple of the bluegrass music scene in Lexington, Ky., they have been invited to the CMT Awards, signed a recording contract with eOne Nashville and performed at an Atlanta Braves game. Their video, "Home," has aired on CMT; their avid fans have consistently voted them into the weekly CMT "Pure 12-Pack Countdown" and CMT "Social Hour," beating out artists such as Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, and Eric Church; Bob Seger's new lead guitarist, Rob McNelly, asked if he could join them in the recording studio and performed a solo for their next release; they performed live on the Sirius XM radio show "The Highway;" they opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd, performed live with Darius Rucker, and in a few months, will be sharing the stage with Corey Smith and The Charlie Daniels Band. Add all of this excitement to their fierce travel and performance schedule and, well, one of their favorite hashtags says it all: #DOWHAT?
Heady stuff for two young men from Prestonsburg, Ky., who started playing together as boys in church. And their fans, or #kinfolk, get to enjoy the excitement right along with them via their prolific social media presence. Following them is like reading updates from family members.
"The last few months have been a blur," Bentley says. "Three months ago (I think, ha-ha), 'Home' debuted at #1 on CMT's Pure 12-Pack Countdown, which still doesn't feel real. Not only did it debut at #1, but it has stayed in the countdown since. Recently, the video for 'Lily' has also been added to CMT 'Pure,' and is also in the running to be on the countdown [at the time of this writing, "Lily" did indeed secure the #1 spot on the CMT countdown]. The fact that we have two videos, both with a shot to make it to the countdown, is unbelievable. Not many artists, if any, get that opportunity. Very fortunate.
"Shortly after 'Home' debuted at #1, we got invited to the CMT Awards show, which, yet again, was surreal," Bentley continues. "We got to walk the red carpet and do all the media interviews. It's all happening really fast. The show was so much fun and it was beyond neat getting to hang out and meet lots of different artists."
As for the newly minted recording contract, Bentley says, "We couldn't be more happy and excited. We're confident in the path we are headed in and looking forward to the music that we are going to be making. Lots and lots to be excited about."
eOne Nashville's label Vice President Van Fletcher is quoted in a press release announcing the signing of Sundy Best: "There is more energy emoting from an acoustic guitar, a cajon and an engaging vocal capturing an audience like I haven't seen in a long time."
"We're very excited to be releasing a new album Door Without a Screen: Deluxe Edition on August 27th," Bentley says, adding, "You can preorder now on iTunes!"
