Perhaps never in the history of the Norton Center for the Arts has there been a show with no sound—no spoken word, no music, not a peep. But with Mummenschanz, seeing is everything.

Mummenschanz will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 in Newlin Hall in the Norton Center for the Arts. The performance counts as a convocation credit for Centre students. There will also be a matinee for students from local schools at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6.

The performance troupe, currently celebrating its 40th anniversary, repurposes everyday objects—including boxes, tubes, fabric, clay and even toilet paper—to create a fascinating new world full of vivid and interesting creatures.

“Mummenschanz is one of those companies that has touched people for decades the way Blue Man Group or Stomp touches people now,” says Steve Hoffman, director of the Norton Center for the Arts. “Their unique style of performance is as aggressive and invigorating as it is gentle and beautiful.”

By blending acting, dance, mime and even some magic, Mummenschanz creates their own “comic universe – a place of constant wonder and ingenuity,” according to the Boston Herald.

“It is truly performance art that appeals to people from across the world, from the youngest to the oldest,” Hoffman says. “It is magical.”
