Centre College has announced that Hugh G. Hines, Jr. ’60 has been named the 2013 Associate of the Year and Rob King III ’04 has been named the 2013 Young Associate of the Year. The College made the announcement at the Centre Associates Dinner on Jan. 25 at the Seelbach Hotel in Louisville.

Hines, a 1960 graduate of Centre College, has spent his life serving his college, community, country and profession. After graduation from Centre, Hines served as an Engineering, Operations and Executive Officer in the U.S. Navy. He returned to Danville after he left active duty and opened the Danville office of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. He has also served as a director or partner in other businesses, including Fine Prints Marketing, Kennington Associates, the Todd Organization, Top o’ the Mornin’ Group, Executive Benefit Specialists of Kentucky LLC and M & H Riverside Farm.

Hines has also been an active supporter of Centre College and the Danville community. He has served on the local board of the American Red Cross and the Central Kentucky Cancer Board; has been a trustee of Ephraim McDowell Health and chaired the Ephraim McDowell Health Foundation; and served as president of the Kentucky Golf Association and as a committee member of the U.S. Golf Association. In his service to Centre, he has been president of the Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Trustees and a member of the President’s Advisory Council. Most recently, he chaired the fundraising committee for the 2012 Vice Presidential Debate.

“In choosing a person to recognize as our Centre Associate of the Year, we look for an individual whose record of professional achievement, civic engagement and service to Centre may appropriately be called excellent,” said Richard Trollinger, vice president for college relations. “In this year’s honoree, Hugh G. Hines, Jr., we have again identified such a person.”

When choosing a Young Associate of the Year, Trollinger said, the College seeks a person who has all the characteristics of an Associate of the Year, but has graduated from Centre within the past ten years.

“This means the honoree will have already compiled an impressive record of personal achievement, civic engagement and service to Centre,” Trollinger said. “Rob King may well define the category.”

King, an economics major at Centre, has been a Northwestern Mutual Financial Representative for more than eight years and is an active part of the Louisville community. He was named one of NFocus Magazine’s 2012 New Faces of Philanthropy and chaired NeXT!, a prestigious young professional leadership program and served as an executive committee member and co-founder of the 35 Under 35 leadership campaign. H has also served on the Scout Reach Board of the Boy Scouts of America and was a junior varsity basketball coach for Kentucky Country Day School. He is a member of the Louisville Ballet board of directors, where he also serves as treasurer. He also serves on the board of directors of the Centre College Alumni Association.

As a student, King received the 2004 Paula Crumbie Memorial Prize, awarded to a student who exhibits excellence of character, leadership and academic achievement. He lettered in both track and field and basketball, in which he also received several conference awards. He was named 2004 Resident Assistant of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Housing Officers and was elected Homecoming King in 2003.

“NFocus declared that ‘Rob King’s charisma is palpable,’” Trollinger said. “The magazine might also have said that both his energy and commitment to the common good are boundless.”

In recognition of these honors, both Hines and King received glass awards designed by Brook White ’91, owner of the Flame Run Studio and Gallery in Louisville.
