In the fall of 2013, Centre will begin a new Centre-in-China program at Tongji University, in Shanghai, a rapidly growing city of more than 22 million people.

The Centre-in-China program at Tongji University is open to all Centre students. Courses offered at Tongji may be of particular interest to students studying global commerce, financial economics, modern languages, international studies, history or anthropology. Since students will have the opportunity to learn Chinese in its natural setting, the program will also benefit those considering future career paths in areas where spoken Chinese is helpful, including government, business, commerce, travel and other jobs.

President John A. Roush, his wife Susie and Professor Kyle Anderson visited the Tongji campus during an exploratory trip to China late last year, and report that its setting offers Centre students the best of Shanghai, with a beautiful campus in the heart of the booming metropolitan city. Tongji is one of the top ten universities in China and one of the best architectural and civil engineering universities in the world.

Students who participate in the Centre-in-China program are required to take six hours of Mandarin classes appropriate to their level of previous understanding of the language. The other four classes students take will be chosen by the students from a group of eight possibilities, including courses in Chinese culture, history, economics, development and sustainability. These four classes will translate into two three-hour credits at Centre.

The Centre-in-China program at Tongji is established with the help of Derek Capo, CEO of Next Step China. Capo has arranged for a bilingual coordinator in Shanghai to assist students if problems arise, along with two other bilingual residents in Shanghai.

Studying with the Centre-in-China program costs the same as studying on Centre’s campus in Danville, with the addition of a $350 non-refundable deposit and a portion of the cost of airfare.

To apply for the Centre-in-China program for the Fall of 2013, students should pick up an application and faculty recommendation forms in Old Carnegie. Applications are due in the study abroad office by noon on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Students who are selected must pay the non-refundable $350 deposit/surcharge to the Cashier's Office in Boles Hall by March 5 to hold their spot in the program.
