20 Questions with Director of Facilities Management Wayne King

1. Position at Centre?
Director of Facilities Management

2. Where did you grow up (and describe the place in one phrase or sentence)?
Parksville, here in Boyle County. I am an old-fashioned country boy and there is no place better than the knobs of Kentucky to explore and hike.

3. What are your hobbies?
Fishing when I can, and target shooting at the local sportsman club.

4. What is your dream vacation?
Someday the wife and I would like to travel to Ireland.

5. Favorite artist and/or work of art?
Jack Kellam. He was a local artist associated with Centre, and he painted many beautiful pictures of Centre and Danville.

6. Favorite novel or poem?
“The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe.

7. Favorite sport (to watch or play)?
Basketball — I coached rec league fourth and fifth grade girls’ basketball for over twenty years.

8. Favorite TV show?
Old reruns of “Gunsmoke.”

9. Favorite album?
Bob Seger’s greatest hits.

10. Favorite holiday?
Christmas. I enjoy playing Santa and talking to the kids.

11. Favorite food?
Pinto beans and cornbread.

12. Most prized possession?
My wife and family.

13. Three people, living or deceased, whom you’d invite to the same dinner party?
Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. I would love to hear their opinions of the world today.

14. Favorite aspect of your job?
I really have enjoyed watching Centre grow and change over the years.

15. Most memorable experience of your youth?
Just sitting on the bank fishing with my Grandpa Jim.

16. What would you be doing if you weren't working at Centre?
Working with children in some capacity.

17. Educational experience that's been most helpful to you?
Working at Centre under my first director for 18 years, Henry Lewis. He was like a second father to me in some ways, and I learned a great deal from him.

18. Fictional character in whose shoes you’d love to spend a day?
Maybe Tom Sawyer — I could see myself floating down the river without a care in the world and no responsibilities.

19. Favorite place on campus (and why)?
Breck — I love the ghost stories.

20. Advice you'd give to a first-year college student to make success more likely?
The same thing I tell my staff: never assume anything.
