Getting to Know...Women’s lacrosse coach Julie Beer

Julie Beer Julie Beer was named head women’s lacrosse coach in
June 2009. Centre is one of only three institutions in the
state to field intercollegiate men’s and women’s lacrosse
teams; competitive play will begin this fall.
1. Position at Centre? Head women’s lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach

2. Where did you grow up (and describe the place in one phrase or sentence)? I grew up in Spencer, Massachusetts; it's a lot like Kentucky but with a coastal breeze and a Boston accent!

3. What are your hobbies? I like fishing, gardening, reading, and at the mercy of my more academic pursuits: playing video games.

4. What is your favorite work of art? My favorite work of art is the painting The Slave Ship by J.M. William Turner. Looking at it I actually feel a sense of foreboding, like I'm being left behind by the ship as well.

5. Favorite sport (besides lacrosse, if that’s your favorite) to watch? I'm a die-hard New England Patriots, and Boston Red Sox fan!

6. Favorite novel or poem? Favorite poems are “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot and “The Wellfleet Whale” by Stanley Kunitz

7. Most memorable trip or vacation? A cross country trip I made with my grandparents and cousin while I was in the eighth grade

8. Favorite TV show? The Biggest Loser and History's Mysteries

9. Favorite album? Van Morrison's greatest hits

10. Favorite singer and/or band? Joni Mitchell

11. Favorite food? Since moving to the South, biscuits and gravy!

12. Favorite season? Fall

13. Three people, living or deceased, who you’d invite to the same dinner party? Sarah Palin, Rosie O'Donnell and Mae West

14. Favorite aspect of being a coach? Being out on the turf on a gorgeous day coaching a great game

15. Favorite Centre tradition? I like the running of the Flame... though I have yet to see that done. I'm starting to believe it's a lot of hype!

16. What would you be doing if you weren't working at Centre? Somewhere coaching lacrosse!

17. Educational experience that's been most helpful to you? My high school teacher, Mrs. Tsantinis', guidance. She taught me the very important lesson to always look for alternatives.

18. Best thing about growing up in your family? Having access to a wonderful beach home on Cape Cod

19. Favorite aspect of lacrosse? The fast-paced nature of the game

20. Advice you'd give to a first-year college student to make success more likely? Take a deep breath, and don't get caught up in drama.
